All Eyes on Trade: How We Buy and Sell Coffee

Trading coffee today is way more than moving a physical product from A to B. In many ways, it has become a business of managing time, price and risk. Coffee is often bought months before it is sold, shipped long before it is consumed and priced at a different moment than when it changes hands. In between, markets move, exchange rates change and conditions shift.

Mail from Group Comms: A personal Update

Time really does fly – another six months have passed and here is our next issue of the MAG! And I can hardly believe it, but I have really been with NKG for five years now. This anniversary reminded me of how much I have learned about our business and how much there still is to learn more about. Our core business, for example: this issue is all about trade! From what I heard when I first entered NKG, traders were mainly focused on their core tasks and their customers. This view definitely changed through working on the current issue of our MAG!

Give Diverse Voices a Stage: Women in Trade

Each year, International Women’s Day reminds us that diverse perspectives, open conversations and truly listening to each other are more than just values – they drive good decisions and successful business. This year’s initiative, “Give Diverse Voices a Stage,” invited women across NKG to apply to represent the company at the Women in Tea & Coffee Conference in London. In total, 28 inspiring colleagues shared their experiences, ideas and contributions.
It showed us two things: there is still room to grow, but many of these voices are already shaping our everyday reality. Especially in trade, our core business, their impact is often just less visible. We spoke to Agnes and Victoria, whose perspectives help bring trading to life – from an exporter’s and an importer’s point of view.

Interview with Marten

Linda Lin’s first coffee‑related role was far from quiet. “I started out on the open outcry trading floor at the NYBOT exchange, working as a clerk,” she says – an environment where coffee was as much a constant as the noise and pace.

From Farm to Shipment: Where Coffee begins

Every cup of coffee starts with a story – and that story begins long before the beans reach a roastery or our cup. At NKG, we are all coffee experts in our own way: Some know exactly what coffee plants need to thrive, others master the numbers behind the business or know exactly which coffee is best for which customer, and some have excellent sensoric skills, make sure we are visible in the market or keep us legally compliant. There are countless roles along the coffee supply chain – and we have the expertise in all of them. Yet, most of us work within our own area of an increasingly complex business, and even after years at NKG, some parts of the supply chain remain blind spots.

Interview with Paula Caetano

“My coffee passion started here, at Stockler — I didn’t even drink coffee before!” says Paula Caetano. Growing up in Santos, where coffee has always been key, she adds: “Once you enter this world, you never want to leave.”

Interview Krista Maruca

For many, coffee is a daily ritual. For others, it’s a lifelong passion. For one American now based in Nairobi, it’s both.
