Interview with
Marten Sievers

Starting in farm management, Marten discovered coffee through the full journey from tree to cup. “That link between land, people, cultures, product and global markets is what hooked me,” he says. Today, he has been with NKG for almost 16 years. During this time, he held several roles across the group: from Finance Management at Tropical Farm Management Zug to Financial Coaching at Neumann Gruppe Hamburg, regional Managing Director at NKG East Afika, and now since January, Regional CEO EMEA.

What he appreciates most about working with NKG is “a global network of entrepreneurs, paired with a genuine focus on long-term thinking,” as well as working with a team that is truly passionate about coffee.
And if he could swap with anyone at NKG? “There are so many people I would love to learn from,” he says. At the moment, his choice would be Judy Murimi, Head of Quality in East Africa. “I would be slurping the best coffee every morning and could finally dedicate enough time to develop my palate for coffee.”

How do you like to drink your coffee and in which situation? (For example, a Café Latte in a nice café on weekends, an Espresso at work …)

Espresso, in the morning before I leave the house and after I have had a cup of Earl Grey for breakfast. Black filter coffee during the day at the office.

What makes you laugh a lot – even on stressful days?

Black humor, mostly. Life supplies enough absurdity that you just need to point at it. And slapstick, there’s a certain dignity in watching someone’s, occasionally mine, daily little disasters.

If you could be any fictional character for a week, who would it be and what adventures would you have?

Obelix, wild boar hunts, adventure, epic feasts and good company around the campfire.

What was your most beautiful moment during a visit to a coffee farm?

On the farmhouse terrace, cold beer in hand, watching the first rain after a long drought. The relief on my colleagues’ faces said it all. Also, a quiet reminder that we can’t control everything, and success also depends on higher forces.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and who gave it to you?

My grandfather used to say: “Es gibt nichts Gutes, außer man tut es”. Translates to “Nothing good happens unless you do it”. That taught me to dare to try and let my mistakes and defeats be my best teachers.
