For many, coffee is a daily ritual. For others, it’s a lifelong passion. For one American now based in Nairobi, it’s both.
How do you like to drink your coffee and in which situation? (For example, a Café Latte in a nice café on weekends, an Espresso at work …)
I love having coffee at home, I usually am drinking left over cupping samples of something nice made with a French press using James Hoffmans recipe. I enjoy any type of coffee however I have a soft spot for fresh washed and natural Ethiopians.
What makes you laugh a lot – even on stressful days?
My children Mila and Leo and my partner Milena make me laugh a lot. At work Roasters who make ridiculous bids or approach their coffee purchasing like they order a pizza.
What was your most beautiful moment during a visit to a coffee farm?
Recently in Brazil after cupping a very special coffee we met the producer Bernardo Scarpelli of Fazenda Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora. He hosted me and my colleague Jorge Wada and two customers to his farm and I could feel the connection between the producer, the site which was stunning and the coffee we had cupped. Then to see his trees which were only two years old, to think that they could produce a coffee like this was exhilarating and a reminder that coffee can be magical and how it bonds us.
If you could swap jobs with anyone anywhere at NKG – who would it be and why?
Donato Pensa at Bero Italia – I have been to the Cinque Terre and would love to work near there and in my younger years often thought about spending some time working in Italy.
What small changes in everyday life do you believe can have a big impact?
Drinking and cupping coffee
