Interview with Melyne Achieng

For the past two years, Regional Responsible Business Program Manager Melyne has been on an – for her – unexpected journey in the coffee world. “Although I was open to the agriculture sector, I never imagined working in coffee until I joined NKG,” she says. Her passion for coffee started during the interview process, sparked by an introduction to various grades of green coffee: “You never realize how vast and complex the coffee world is until you’re in it!” The aroma from the quality department’s roasting sealed the deal, transforming Melyne from a tea enthusiast to a dedicated coffee drinker. She particularly enjoys visiting Kaweri, finding the rows of coffee trees and bio corridors soothing. Despite being the sole RBP & Compliance representative in the region, she feels well-supported. “The dynamic nature of the work – new challenges and topics throughout the year – means there’s never a dull moment,” she shares. While content in her current role, Melyne would be interested in incorporating topics to get closer to the producers, aiming to expand her impact while staying true to her passion.

What does a perfect weekend look like for you?

One where I can be as silly as possible🙃! It gets sillier when I spend time with my kids and siblings – it is a perfect way to de-roll! My longtime high school friend also knows just how to push me to that zone of carefree fun.

What is the most memorable trip or vacation you’ve ever taken and why?

My 2022 vacation to Diani-South coast – during a boat excursion to Wasini Island. It was my first time seeing dolphins and swimming with the turtles. But the most memorable part was the abrupt return of seawater on the temporary island we were on, this shook me to the core!

How do you like to drink your coffee and in which situation? (For example, a Café Latte in a nice café on weekends, an Espresso at work …)

I used to be a tea person but since I joined NKG, my morning starts with an americano coffee. While in a café I always find myself taking Latte instead. 🤭

What makes you laugh a lot?

Remembering childhood and high school mischief makes me laugh until I’m in tears! Like when our drama club skipped morning prep, hiding in the dorm. One of us got caught and claimed her “thorax” hurt, and we all burst out laughing, completely forgetting we were hiding! 🤣

Do you have any hidden skills nobody expects you to have?

People know about my love for art and colors, but no one guesses my secret talent: I comfortably sing baritone or tenor! Surprisingly, I find these two ranges much easier to handle than other keys, and I really enjoy it!

If you could be any fictional character for a week, who would it be and what adventures would you have?

I’d definitely be Fa Mulan and spend the week pushing limits! (It had to be a cartoon character; I love animated movies.) She’s a brave, bold, and relentless character; just like her I always say: “there is no excuse, go for it!”

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and who gave it to you?

My former boss always said, “Never build solutions on hope.” I’ve lived by that. Planning, taking action, and creating strategies have consistently worked better than hoping things will just fall into place.

five things you like

FOOD
Whole tilapia; deep fried with hot and sweet sauce, alongside traditional Kenyan vegetables and ugali. Just mentioning it makes my mouth water!

TEAM ACTIVITIES
Fun games and family game nights. Where possible I always bring in ‘uno’ cards where winning is less predictable.

GAMES
I’m not much of an athlete, but I love watching rugby. It’s the one sport where I actually understand the rules!

HOBBIES
Dancing! Even though the moves in my mind don’t always turn out as smooth in reality, it’s always a blast!

PLACES
Shopping malls. No, not for actual shopping but for window shopping. It’s a fun way I get to explore without having to buy anything.
