Strengthening Farms, Securing Coffee Production

When we speak about Farmcare Practices in Peru, it’s not an abstract concept. For Coinca, it translates into the daily work of our CEE Department – a dedicated team of seven agronomists and field technicians who accompany producers throughout the year. Their mission is simple but far-reaching: to strengthen farms, improve resilience, and secure consistent, high-quality coffee production within our NKG Verified supply chains.

At this time of year (late October/early November), the team is busy preparing the coffee nurseries, where new seedlings are cultivated. These viveros are the starting point of every renovation effort. In collaboration with selected producers, we provide rust-resistant coffee varieties that are better adapted to local conditions and future climate risks. By ensuring that the right varieties are planted, we help farmers rebuild their farms in a sustainable and economically viable way.

Each member of the CEE team covers a specific geographic area, visiting farmers regularly to give personalized technical assistance. Their work goes far beyond agronomy: they monitor the health of the plantations, support soil-management decisions, and advise on pruning, shade, and fertilization practices. The goal is to help each farm reach a balanced state — productive, healthy, and aligned with long-term environmental goals.

Training plays a central role in this process. Throughout the year, the team conducts on-farm demonstrations and short, practical sessions on best agricultural practices. We focus on individual follow-ups, where recommendations can be adapted to each farmer’s reality. This personal approach has proven most effective in building trust and achieving measurable results.

The challenges remain substantial. Limited access to inputs and financing continues to affect the speed at which farmers can adopt improvements. Climatic variability adds another layer of uncertainty, pushing the team to constantly adjust its recommendations — from promoting agroforestry systems that combine shade trees with coffee, to suggesting soil-conservation methods and diversified cropping models.

Despite these constraints, progress is visible. More producers are now working with improved field management and showing a stronger commitment to sustainability. Quality levels are rising, and the diversity of coffees from different altitudes and micro-regions keeps expanding.

After visiting the field and seeing the results firsthand, I am deeply impressed by the dedication and expertise of our CEE team. The visible impact of their work and the positive feedback by the producers is remarkable and a clear sign of how much can be achieved when knowledge, passion, and collaboration come together at the very roots of coffee.

Dear MAG-readers,
Sometimes, when I’m sitting at my laptop in Hamburg, it seems to me as if I was quite far away from our product, especially the beginning of the coffee supply chain. Then, I remember that I’m only a phone call, email, or Teams message away from the farms and exporters. Every time I talk to colleagues who work in coffee cultivation or at our export companies, I feel that this is not that far. Although we live in different time zones and work in different realities, something common emerges from our exchanges.
