NKG Holding “who is who”: NG Insurances

Neumann Gruppe in Hamburg consists of departments with a diverse variety of functions and competencies, which both serve the general strategic orientation of NKG and provide specific support for the group companies. In our INSIDE NKG MAG we want to look at what competencies exist in the holding company, for whom these could be helpful and interesting, who is responsible for what, and a lot more. In this issue we would like to introduce NG Insurances.

“We have very few insurance claims, so all the prevention work is bearing fruit.”

NG Insurances is the central Insurances department for NKG, based in Hamburg within the holding.

The department consists of two colleagues: Jörn Hosberg as Head of NG Insurances and Yvonne Böge, who have been working very successful together for nearly 3 years. They are responsible for managing insurance matters regarding the global marine insurance program within the group. Their focus is to securing transport and storage facilities worldwide, assessing risks, and supporting damage prevention and claims handling to ensure safe operations across all NKG companies.

NKG operates actively around 400 warehouses worldwide. Each of these facilities represents a significant investment, with an average insurance value of about USD 30 million. Altogether, this amounts to an impressive total of roughly USD 12 billion in insured assets across our global network, that we are securing through NG Insurances.

Furthermore, they are responsible for property insurance and for also for the company liability insurance in Hamburg. This comes with a wide range of responsibilities: Jörn visits NKG companies around the world – mostly export firms – together with a risk consulting expert from our main underwriter. Their goal: to check our mills, storage facilities, and partner warehouses to make sure all safety and loss prevention standards are in place.

They also provide support whenever needed regarding loss prevention during all kinds of transportation.

When it comes to large projects at NKG like new constructions of mills and warehouses, such as the new mill for Ibero Uganda, Jörn is involved from the planning up to the realization as advisor and key contact in order to ensure the coverage under the insurance policy.

The biggest current project in this respect is the construction of a fire wall in Varginha, Brazil. At the local warehouse of NKG Stockler, a large fire wall will be built to divide the facility into two separate fire sections. In the event of a major fire, this measure will help minimize damage and protect at least half of the warehouse. To put this into perspective: the entire Varginha warehouse has an insurance value of roughly USD 400 million, while the coffee storage facility at NKG Kala Hamburg is valued at USD 100 million.

In addition, Insurance coverage also means upholding a lot of rights and obligations. The department must accompany the settlement of claims while at the same time making sure that obligations such as the monthly insurance report are fulfilled and that all requirements set by insurers regarding storage or transport are complied with.

Their mission in all the above is clear: to minimize risks and meet all requirements of the underwriters, like security and fire protection in warehouses and during transport.

With their deep knowledge of global insurance markets and their strong network of partners, the Insurance team enables NKG companies to focus on what they do best, knowing the green coffee is always safe and insured, no matter if the product is stored in a warehouse or on the road from A to B.

Virtual Tour: NKG Fazenda da Lagoa

Located in Santo Antônio do Amparo, Minas Gerais, in the heart of Brazil’s coffee production region, the history of Fazenda da Lagoa (NKG Fazendas Brasileiras) dates back to Colonial Brazil, when the Portuguese settler Manoel Ferreira Carneiro received these lands in 1764 for sugarcane cultivation and cattle raising. In 1860, the first coffee tree in the Campos das Vertentes region was planted at Fazenda da Lagoa, and in 2003, the property joined the Neumann Kaffee Gruppe, which is fully dedicated to sustainable coffee production.
